Salah the five daily prayers is the second pillar of Islam and the most consistent act of worship in a Muslim’s daily life. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) described Salah as ‘the pillar of the religion’ (Amud al-Deen). And yet, many Muslims in Luton born Muslims who grew up watching their parents pray, reverts who have taken their Shahada, and adults returning to practice after a gap do not know how to perform Salah correctly.

At Luton Quran Academy, learning Salah is not a side feature of our Islamic Studies programme it is a core priority. We teach the complete, correct performance of all five daily prayers: the physical positions, the Arabic recitations, the conditions of validity, and the spiritual understanding behind every movement.

Why So Many Muslims in Luton Need Salah Instruction

It may seem surprising that Muslims need to be taught how to pray. But the reality of British Muslim life — particularly among second and third-generation communities in Luton — is that many adults prayed by imitation throughout childhood without ever formally learning the correct method, conditions, or recitations.

For reverts, the situation is even clearer: Salah is an entirely new practice, in a language they do not yet speak, with a physical methodology they have never performed. Without proper instruction, reverts are left piecing together prayers from YouTube videos and conflicting advice from well-meaning but unqualified friends.

At Luton Quran Academy, we teach Salah the right way — completely, correctly, and with the Fiqh understanding that allows a Muslim to pray with confidence for the rest of their life.

What Our Salah Programme Covers

Part 1: Wudu — Ritual Purification

Salah is only valid with Wudu (وضوء) — the ritual purification performed before prayer. We teach the complete Wudu methodology: the obligatory acts (Fara’id al-Wudu), the Sunnah acts, the common mistakes that invalidate Wudu, and the things that break Wudu. We also cover Ghusl (full ritual bath) for situations where it is required, and Tayammum (dry purification) as an alternative when water is unavailable.

Part 2: The Surahs and Recitations of Salah

Every Salah contains specific Quranic recitations. We teach the following, with correct Tajweed, until the student can recite them confidently from memory:

Part 3: The Physical Positions of Salah

Salah involves a precise sequence of physical positions — Qiyam (standing), Ruku (bowing), Sujud (prostration), Juloos (sitting) — each with specific posture requirements. We teach the correct physical method of each position, the Sunnah of how the Prophet (PBUH) performed them, and the common postural mistakes that reduce the validity or spiritual quality of Salah.

Part 4: The Five Daily Prayers — Fajr, Zuhr, Asr, Maghrib, Isha

Each of the five daily prayers has a different number of Rakahs and different structural rules. We teach each prayer individually — the number of Fard, Sunnah, and Nafl Rakahs; the correct sequence for obligatory and voluntary prayers; and the distinction between praying alone and praying in congregation (Jama’ah).

Part 5: Fiqh of Salah — Conditions, Obligations, and Invalidators

The Fiqh of Salah covers the conditions that must be met before prayer is valid (Shurut al-Salah), the obligatory elements of the prayer itself (Arkan al-Salah), the Wajib acts, and the Sunnah acts. It also covers what invalidates a prayer (Mufsidaat al-Salah) — so a Muslim can pray with certainty that their prayer has been accepted. This is based on Hanafi Fiqh, the school most widely followed by Luton’s South Asian Muslim community.

How to Learn Salah in Luton:

Part 6: Jumu’ah — Friday Prayer

Jumu’ah (Friday prayer) carries specific obligations for Muslim men and has particular conditions and rulings. Our programme covers the Fiqh of Jumu’ah, the Khutbah (sermon), and the correct performance of the Friday prayer for students who attend the many mosques in Luton — including those in Bury Park, Maidenhall, and Leagrave.

Part 7: The Spiritual Dimension of Salah — Khushu

Salah is not merely physical movement and Arabic recitation. The Prophet (PBUH) described Khushu (خشوع) — inner humility and presence — as the soul of Salah. Our programme includes a module on developing mindfulness and spiritual presence in prayer: understanding the meaning of what you recite, visualising standing before Allah, and transforming Salah from routine to genuine communion.

For Reverts: Learning Salah From Scratch

Luton Quran Academy has taught Salah to many reverts across Luton and Bedfordshire who had just taken their Shahada.

We begin from absolute zero — no assumed knowledge, no Arabic expected.

Within 4–6 weeks of consistent sessions, most reverts are able to perform all five daily prayers correctly and independently.

Our teachers are patient, encouraging, and understand that learning a new form of worship as an adult takes courage and commitment.

Online Salah Classes in Luton

Our Salah programme is fully available online via live video call. This is particularly useful for reverts who may feel self-conscious attending in-person classes, working adults who cannot attend daytime sessions, and sisters who prefer learning in the privacy of their home.

Online Salah instruction works extremely well — the teacher observes your posture and recitation via video, corrects in real time, and guides you through each step of the prayer exactly as they would in person.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I am a Muslim but have never learned to pray correctly. Is it too late?

A: It is never too late. Many adults in Luton who have been Muslim their whole lives begin formal Salah instruction with us — and consistently say it is one of the most transformative things they have done for their faith.

Q: How long does it take to learn to pray correctly?

A: Most students can perform all five daily prayers with correct recitations and postures within 4–8 weeks of consistent sessions (2–3 per week). Refining Tajweed within Salah and developing Khushu is a longer, ongoing journey.

Q: Do you teach Salah according to the Hanafi madhab?

A: Yes. Our Salah instruction follows Hanafi Fiqh — the school most widely followed by British Muslims of South Asian background and broadly followed by many Arab and African Muslim communities as well.

Q: Is there a female teacher for sisters learning Salah?

A: Yes. Our qualified female teacher teaches the complete Salah programme to sisters — including Salah-specific Fiqh for women — in completely private, one-to-one sessions online or in person.

Q: Can children learn Salah at Luton Quran Academy?

A: Yes. Children from age 7 — the age at which the Prophet (PBUH) commanded parents to encourage prayer — can begin our Salah programme. We make Salah learning engaging and memorable for children through structured repetition and encouragement.
