There is a quiet reality among many adult Muslims in Luton: they grew up going to madrasa, learning to recite the Quran, observing the five pillars but without ever deeply understanding why. What does Iman actually mean? What are the theological foundations of Islamic belief? What did the Prophet (PBUH) really teach, beyond the rituals?
At Luton Quran Academy, our Islamic Studies programme for adults is designed precisely for this moment when a Muslim is ready to move from habit to understanding, from ritual to conviction, from inherited faith to personally owned belief. Whether you are in your 20s, 40s, or 60s, it is never too late to learn what your religion truly teaches.

Why Adult Muslims in Luton Seek Islamic Studies
The British Muslim experience is unique. Adults in Luton’s Muslim communities whether from long-established Pakistani and Bangladeshi families in Bury Park and Leagrave, or from more recently arrived Somali, Arab, or African communities often share a common gap: they know how to be Muslim, but not always why.
This gap becomes increasingly significant as British Muslim adults face intellectual challenges to their faith from secular education, workplace conversations, media portrayals of Islam, and the genuine questions of their own children growing up in Britain. A Muslim who understands their Aqeedah can respond with confidence. A Muslim who has only inherited habit cannot.
| Who Is This Programme For?
Born Muslims who practise but want a deeper theological and scholarly understanding of their faith. Adults who attended madrasa as children but never studied Islamic knowledge at an adult level. Reverts who have taken their Shahada and want a structured, comprehensive Islamic education. Professionals in Luton who have questions about Islam that deserve thoughtful, scholarly answers. Parents who want to be able to answer their children’s questions about faith with confidence. |
Islamic Studies Curriculum for Adults
1. Aqeedah — Islamic Theology
Aqeedah (عقيدة) is the core theological creed of Islam —the systematic articulation of what a Muslim believes about Allah, His attributes (Asma wa Sifaat), the nature of prophethood (Nubuwwah), and the unseen realities of faith. Our adult Aqeedah curriculum draws on the classical Maturidi and Ashari traditions of Sunni theology, with reference to foundational texts such as Imam al-Tahawi’s Al-Aqeedah al-Tahawiyyah.
Students learn to articulate and defend their beliefs — distinguishing authentic Islamic theology from innovation (Bid’ah) and misrepresentation, and engaging thoughtfully with the intellectual challenges that British Muslims face in secular professional and academic environments.
2. Fiqh — Islamic Jurisprudence
Fiqh (فقه) is Islamic law — the practical rulings governing Muslim worship, daily life, business, family, and social relations. Our adult Fiqh curriculum follows the Hanafi madhhab — the school of Islamic jurisprudence most widely followed by British Muslims of South Asian background — with reference to the Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools where relevant.
Topics covered include: the complete rulings of Taharah (ritual purity) and Salah (prayer); Fiqh of fasting (Sawm) and Zakat; Islamic rulings on business transactions (Muamalat); Halal and Haram in everyday British life; and contemporary Fiqh questions facing British Muslims — Islamic finance, medical ethics, and professional life.
3. Seerat-un-Nabi — The Life of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)
The Seerat of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) — his life, character, decisions, and legacy — is the most detailed and verified biography in human history. Adults who study Seerat properly discover a leader, a statesman, a father, a husband, and a prophet whose example answers the most pressing questions of modern Muslim life.
Our Seerat curriculum covers the full arc of the Prophet’s life: pre-Islamic Arabia (Jahiliyyah), his birth and early life in Makkah, the first revelation in the Cave of Hira at age 40, the Makkan period of persecution and patience, the Hijra to Madinah in 622 CE, the establishment of the Islamic state, major events including Badr, Uhud, and the Conquest of Makkah, and the Farewell Pilgrimage and his passing in 11 AH.
4. Hadith Sciences — Understanding the Sunnah
The Hadith literature — the recorded sayings, actions, and tacit approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) — is the second primary source of Islamic knowledge after the Quran. Our Hadith Sciences module introduces adults to the classification of Hadith (Sahih, Hasan, Da’if), the science of narrator evaluation (Ilm al-Rijal), and the major Hadith collections — Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim, Sunan Abu Dawud, Jami al-Tirmidhi, Sunan al-Nasa’i, and Sunan Ibn Majah (known collectively as the Kutub al-Sittah).
5. Tafsir — Understanding the Quran
Tafsir (تفسير) is the scholarly interpretation and explanation of the Quran. Our adult Tafsir module begins with the methodology of classical Tafsir (Usul al-Tafsir) — how scholars interpret the Quran using the Quran itself, the Hadith, the language of classical Arabic, and the context of revelation (Asbab al-Nuzul). Students then study selected Surahs in depth, beginning with Juz Amma and progressing to longer Surahs of particular relevance.
6. Islamic Ethics — Akhlaq and Tasawwuf
Islam is not merely a legal system — it is a complete moral and spiritual framework. Our Islamic Ethics module draws on the classical tradition of Akhlaq (character ethics) rooted in the Quran and Sunnah, and introduces the concept of Ihsan (spiritual excellence) — the dimension of Islam that goes beyond outward compliance to inner sincerity and connection with Allah.
| A Note on Learning Style
Adult Islamic Studies at Luton Quran Academy is not a lecture. It is a conversation. Our teachers encourage questions — including difficult ones. No question is considered inappropriate or threatening. Adults learn best when they understand the reasoning behind rulings and beliefs, not just the rulings themselves. Our sessions are conducted in English, with Arabic terminology introduced and explained in context. |
Online vs In-Person Islamic Studies for Adults in Luton
Both formats are available. Online Islamic Studies sessions are particularly popular among working professionals in Luton who cannot commit to fixed travel times. Sessions are scheduled at morning, evening, and weekend slots around your professional and family life.
In-person sessions at our Maidenhall centre offer the additional dimension of a dedicated learning environment — sitting with a scholar in a space designed for Islamic knowledge, which many adults find adds focus and reverence to their studies.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I practise Islam but have never formally studied it. Where do I begin?
A: We begin with an assessment session to understand your existing knowledge and your specific goals. From there, we build a personalised curriculum — starting with Aqeedah fundamentals and Seerat, then progressing to Fiqh and Hadith Sciences based on your pace and interests.
Q: Can I study Islamic Studies online in Luton without attending in person?
A: Yes. All adult Islamic Studies sessions are available via live one-to-one video call. Sessions are identical in quality to in-person teaching and are available at flexible times throughout the week.
Q: Is Islamic Studies available in English?
A: Yes. All our adult Islamic Studies sessions are conducted in English, with Arabic terminology explained in full context. Students are not required to know Arabic, though we introduce and explain key Arabic terms throughout the curriculum.
Q: I am a revert with no Islamic background. Can I join?
A: Absolutely. Many of our Islamic Studies students are reverts who want a structured, comprehensive Islamic education from the ground up. Our teachers are experienced in teaching Islam to adults coming to the faith for the first time — with patience, clarity, and without assumption of prior knowledge.
Q: Is there a female Islamic Studies teacher for sisters in Luton?
A: Yes. Our qualified female teacher offers Islamic Studies sessions to sisters — online and in person — in completely private, one-to-one settings.
